RE: Trans temps... I've got some data now

I was always told to read the temp in the pan...as this is the fluid going into the trans. The fluid coming out of the trans on the way to the cooler will be hot..but its not going to impact any of the internals since its on the way to the cooler.

RE: Bio Diesel

Thanks everyone for your replies I hope the keep comming in, im very intrested in this, now the ? is if im running only 10% Bio Diesel what is the advantage of running that low, I still have to fill up my tank with #1 Diesel anyway, does the truck run better or longer? My first question is why are you running #1? I am hoping that it was a typo...as your truck will love you much more with #2 in the tank. With the advent of the ULSD...the diesel just doesn't have the "slickness" that it used to have. Adding 10% bio will help to return the lubricity to the fuel. I have seen a study where a mixture as low as B2 is sufficient to return the lubricity back to where its supposed to be for our injectors. In my area...even though we are agricultural...not many places are carrying Bio-D. I have been running a mixture of 2-cycle oil in the tank for quite some time. (1oz 2-cycle to 1 gallon of diesel). This stuff works great. My truck has never been quieter...gained a bit with mpg...and I can find 2-cycle oil in just about any town I stop in if I run out.

RE: Walking on the roof??

I have no problems going on the roof of my wildcat twice yearly for cleaning and inspection. Not particularly fond of it though.

Battery question

I'm thinking of adding a second battery to my 5'er. Stupid question...but do they get wired in series or in parallel? Thanks

RE: Cleaning the rubber roof: Yipes

I clean my roof once every spring. I take a 5gal bucket up with me with spic-n-span...a soft mop and good tennis shoes. It give me the chance to also inspect the seals around the tv antenna, make sure no gas vents got plugged over winter, etc.

RE: Dumbest thing you've ever done while RVing with your Rig?

Thankfully...haven't done anything really stupid...yet...but it is early in my RV'ing career. LOL I've forgot to pull the 7-pin cord out of the receptacle in the back of the truck one day...busted that to pieces. I've always managed to remember that my tailgate is up with either hooking or unhooking...but I figure thats on borrowed time. We had a 4-bike bike rack mounted in the receiver hitch on the back of the rig. We were pulling down to Omaha...and if anybody has been on I-29 south in Iowa...its nothing but "whoopty-doos". Pulled over for a bathroom break and noticed that the constant bouncing in back was fatiguing the bike carrier and I had bikes nearly touching the pavement. Some ratchet straps and prayers got it through the rest of the trip. A couple of summers ago we were in Okoboji...hotter than blazes. One of our 'pane tanks went dry...so I went to get it filled. DW was napping in the camper and the kids were in the pool. When I got back to the campground...had all sorts of people around the front of my rig...with water pouring out of the basement. Seems a fitting blew off near the pump...flooding the basement and getting water in the living area of the camper. Spent the next two days trying to dry out the basement. When I hooked up to leave...I tilted the camper backwards and water came rushing out of the bottom. The bottom of the unit is sealed and was still full of water. I had to take a knife and poke some holes in the "plastic cardboard" to drain the water.

RE: spare tire

Mine was mounted on the rear bumper...but I instead had a platform made to carry my bikes. For now...my spare is mounted/bolted/bungee corded in the storage area in the front of the 5'er. But...I purchased one of those crank down spare tire holders off of Ebay a while ago with the intention of mounting up front between the legs of the unit and using that to hold the spare. I made sure it was a Ford spare tire carrier so that my Ford spare tire crank down handle fits in this as well.

RE: World's Fastest Tow Vehicle?

Good Lord...this thread is nothing more than an argument over whos "thingy" is bigger or can pee farther. Powerwagon...props to you. I don't see what the big deal is that everybody is making. You have stayed within the tow ratings of the maker. My wife's Oldsmobile Silhouette is also rated for 3500 pounds. Growing up mom and dad did nearly all the towing with a car. It was a Montego stationwagon with a 400ci motor...which I can just about guarantee had less hp and TQ than your hemi makes. We had one of the first Starcraft uprights when they came out...and man...were they heavy. I've got my Grandfathers 76 Gran Marquis that was tow rated from the factory with air shocks and an aux tranny cooler... http://www.thedieselgarage.com/gallery/files/3/0/0/trailertow.jpg As long as your combo continues to work well for you...I applaud your "thinking" outside the box for the solution.

RE: diesel fuel, value and volatility

I really wish there were one simple answer to this...but fully believe that there isn't. 1. I don't know the percentages...but the percentage of "gas" drivers compared to "diesel" drivers has to be huge. So...do you mess with the largest group...or the smallest? 2. I know it's a third rail...but politics plays into this as well. I don't think we...the US...have had a sound, reasonable energy policy in place for many many years. Without googling...can you tell me the current Energy Secretary? 3. As was stated...diesel drives countries. With the emerging economies of China, India and others...diesel has become more globally in demand. And has been seen by the attempted purchase of an American oil company by China...they will stop at nothing to make sure they have the energy they feel they need. 4. As was also stated...you've got pure market speculation. And...just like the housing bubble that recently burst with horrible results...I fully believe that you will see the same with the oil bubble. The current price just can't be sustained for very long. I don't see how it can be. But...I am an average Joe and not an economist, so my opinions may not be worth the paper they are printed on.

RE: TV oil change while on the road

I won't let any of those "quick lube" minimum wage kids touch my truck. Wayyy to many horror stories. As I see it...there are a couple of options. 1. On your trip...find a dealer to do it for you. 2. It may be early...but have the oil changed before you leave on your trip. This saves the hassle of doing it during the trip. 3. If you are a "do it yourself" type of guy...when the time comes for the oil change...do it where you are parked. Finding a filter shouldn't be an issue...and neither should be finding diesel oil. If the town is of any size...usually auto parts stores will allow the home mechanic to drop off used motor oil to be recycled. My mechanic uses a "used oil" heater for his shop during winter...so all my used oil goes to him.

RE: Do people travel with "stuff" in black tank?

What do you guys use for chemicals? When we are heading out somewhere for the first time...I will put about 10 to 15 gallons of water in the black tank...then add a couple capfulls of detergent and one of them "packets" you pick up in the Walmart RV section. Name escapes me right now. From then on...I only dump when my indicator shows 2/3rds full. And if I have the choice...I will dump after travelling to a spot...than before leaving that spot. Just to agitate the "stuff" and break it up. Each time then after a dump I add another 10 gallons or so of water, a couple capfulls of detergent and a cup of powdered water softner. So far..no fuss and no stink.

RE: Weather mid May Rushmore and Yellowstone

Where are you staying at...in the hills...or down on the plains? I have seen snow in Custer as late as Memorial Day weekend. If you go to the following page climate summary you can see what normals are for various locations in the hills.

RE: Are these good gauge choices?

I have a 4-gauge pillar mount on my truck...stuffed with Autometer Cobalts. I love them...but be forewarned...they are extremely bright. Autometer sells a dimmer to go with them...get it. You will be glad you did. I tied my lights into my headlight switch...and with the dash dimmed to dark...my gauges were still too bright. I have the full sweep electric boost...and love it. No more worries about kinking a plastic tube or having it split. Truth be told...if you don't do any mods to your truck and run it stock...you have no need for the 60 psi gauge. You'll never see above 30 psi boost on a stock truck. You'll set to CEL before that. I have pictures of my 4-gauge set up. Let me know if you want them posted up.

RE: Bilstein or Monroe

I'm another user of both. I first ran the Monroe's for 2 years. They were ok...but noticed they began to leak after 2 years and about 25k miles. Had a chance to jump into Bilsteins, and have never regretted it. Empty ride is a bit harsher...not too bad. But the truck feels so much more stable when towing.

RE: Which oil in diesel tow vehicle

My truck seems to be happiest with Rotella. I tried the Delo and Mobil...and it just felt different. Tough to describe. I change my oil twice a year...once in spring and once in fall. I just recently switched over to Rotella Synthetic...with plans now on changing oil once a year in the fall. That would only be about 7500 miles...give or take a bit.
